I’ve thought a lot about love and what it means. As a 12 year old in the throws of my first serious, and unrequited, crush, my observation was that the only thing love does is give someone else an unfair advantage over you.

I’ve since learned that love is the emotion that delivers the most strength – not anger, not vengeance, love! To genuinely love a person, thing, or idea, delivers unto the lover enormous strength, expansion of spirit, and dedication. It is just hugely empowering.

Hate, on the other hand condenses the hater. It works just like the astrophysical black hole, sucking in all light and life, and turning them lifeless. Only the very foolish are willing to diminish themselves to nothing through hate.

If love is not a response you can muster, go with complete indifference. People often mistakenly think that love and hate are opposites. They are not. You can not muster great hate unless something has crossed great love. When that happens, you’re far better off retreating to a point of total indifference. Love and hate are strong emotions. The opposite of strong emotion is weak or no emotion. Therefore you need to go straight to indifference.
